“It’s time to get a little nasty, a little sour taste in your mouths,” said Coach Greg Plank, our Head Coach, “it’s game time. Blazers on three. One, two, three.”“Blazers!” we all yelled and screamed. And that was just the start of it all. Blazer football has its ups and downs and Savannah, Missouri is now apart of it. That’s why I love Blazer football. “Jacob, get up, it’s football time,” is what my dad, Ronnie, said. “OK,” I moaned. I wasn’t moaning because I had to play football. I love football. I was moaning because I had to get up. I put on my pants and we’re off to Austin’s Bar and Grill to meet the rest of the team. “What’s up, man? How’s it going?” I asked my friend Brett. “It’s going fine. What about you?” Brett asked me. “Good. Thanks for asking. Where’s Ben?” and out of nowhere Ben pops out. “What’s up, homie?” asks Ben. “Nothing much,” we reply, “what about you?” “The same,” he replies. “Get over here,” yelled Coach Plank, “time to get your jerseys if you didn’t already get them.” After the jerseys were handed out, it was time to head for Savannah. The drive, which felt as long as the Mississippi River, took an hour and a half, it was long. When we got there we got our decals, and then weighed in. Our smallest kid weighed in at like 68 lbs, and our biggest kid weighed in at like 180 lbs. It was almost game time. We got suited up. Game time, kickoff was in two minutes. The first game went by so quickly that now it’s over. The score was twenty-one to nothing with us winning. We played Platte City. At the hotel, Holiday Inn, I went to my hotel room to take a shower, and then I went out to eat with some of my teammates. “What are you guys having?” I asked. “I don’t know,” said my friend Tanner, “I think I’ll have the steak.” “I want the Roadrunner,” said Colton. Conner, Tanner, Chooch, and I got the steak; T.J. got the steak and shrimp, and Colton chose the Roadrunner. (A Roadrunner is a chicken sandwich. Colton liked it so, you should try it.) When we got back to the hotel our coach had us watch some game film. After that, we all got to swim for forty-five minutes or so. We all had to go to bed by 11:00 P.M. The next day we played Marysville. “It’s game time. Let’s win this, guys,” I told my teammates. “Huddle up,” yelled coach, “play your hearts out.” At the end of the game the score was twenty-one to eight with us winning. We had five hours till the next game. Olathe South just beat Saint Joe. That means we’ll be playing Olathe South in the championship game. The Blazers vs. Falcons rivalry is as huge as the Chiefs vs. Raiders rivalry, Cowboys vs. Redskins rivalry, or even the Falcons vs. Bucs rivalry. It’s a gigantic rivalry. Just before the game our coach said, “Get nasty, get mean, and get whatever it takes to win this game!” Some highlights of the game were a touchdown pass that made the score eighteen to nothing and that’s how the score stayed. Eighteen to nothing them, I can’t believe it. We got our medals, got our face in the paper, and took pride to Gardner for second. We rode home the full hour and a half. That’s the Savannah trip. Savannah was great, second is good, but first is better. Going to Savannah was a great experience. I’m glad we took second, but I’m frustrated that we didn’t take first. At the end of the game there were people hurt and crying, but I feel bad for them because the people who were hurt and crying were on their team. One thing I will regret is that neither I nor the rest of the team will be able to say that we went to Savannah, Missouri to play in a football tournament and took first…until next year.
